The Tzuris of King Lear

As we prepare for the High Holy Days this year and our tradition’s annual review of the many ways in which we have missed the mark, join us as we explore Shakespeare’s classic King Lear through a Jewish lens. From intergenerational conflict to sibling rivalry, betrayal, political scheming, disputes over inheritance, moral blindness and violent pursuit of power, this enduring tale has it all. Yet when the story of King Lear made its way to Jewish audiences centuries after it was first written, surprising changes occurred.  In the highly popular staged version in early 20th century America, the actors spoke Yiddish and the tragic story featured a Purim celebration and a happy ending. In Stalin’s Russia, however, the Jewish King Lear was performed as a courageous act, with dire later consequences for its acclaimed star. As the Bard once wrote, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Get ready for 5786 as we explore together why this is still true.

The Philosophy Minyan is a monthly lunchtime series on Zoom. All are welcome to join in an interactive, thought-provoking exploration of topics at the intersection of philosophy, Jewish thought, and contemporary issues. No advance reading is required, and participants will receive online access to all the class materials following each session.
